The History of the Volkswagen Polo

The Volkswagen Polo is now in its sixth generation and is one of the most popular Volkswagen cars of all time.

It launched in 1975 with a 4-cylinder petrol engine and earned 500,000 sales worldwide. 1981 saw the release of the second generation Volkswagen Polo, and this was a significant upgrade to the rather basic original. 3 body shapes were now available, including a hatchback, an estate, and a saloon. 6 different petrol engines were available, and in 1986, 2 diesel options were included for the first time, with 1.3 litre and 1.4 litre engines available.

1994 saw the third generation of the Volkswagen Polo, with a brand new chassis, engine choices, and brake systems. Production ceased when the fourth-generation models were released in 2002, including the sportier GTi model with its 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 150-200 horsepower.

2009 saw the introduction of the fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo, with a 1.6-litre engine and a larger interior. It was a popular choice for many, and it even scooped the European Car Of The Year award in 2010.

The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo is now here, and it was released in 2018. With a more efficient 2-litre engine and 197 horsepower, it is a worthy choice for anybody looking to buy a new or used Volkswagen Polo.

Buying a Used Volkswagen Polo

You have a great deal of choice when buying a used Volkswagen Polo, depending on the trim level and price you're interested in. The Polo trims (S, SE, SE Design, Match, BlueMotion, BlueGT, R-Line, GTI) will give you an idea of what to expect, with the S model being the cheapest entry-point into this Volkswagen range and the GTI being the more expensive, with its turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine.

The Polo S is the most basic model, while the SE offers stylish trim add-ons, tinted wheels, and different alloy wheels. The SEL is more luxurious, including cruise control and parking sensors alongside the standard features you would expect in a Volkswagen. The R-Line has a sportier body kit, while the top-of-the-range GTI features larger alloys, an array of GTI badges, red trim and tartan seats.

In terms of engine sizes, there should be something to suit all tastes. The range begins with the 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine, and it peaks at the 1.8 TSI petrol engine which is fitted to the hot hatch version of the GTI.
