A Brief History of the Volkswagen Golf

The first Volkswagen Golf rolled off the production line in March 1974, and it was seen as a significant departure from the Beetle, that was more commonplace at the time. It had a front-engined, front-wheel-drive layout and a sharp exterior design that made it popular with car buyers. Petrol and diesel variants were available, and by the time production was phased out on this model in 1983, there were almost seven million on the roads.

1983 saw the launch of the Mk2 Golf, which was larger, and contained more interior space. It introduced such features as power steering, all-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes, and a range of new safety features to keep up with customer demand for a safer car.

Safety was the focus of the Mk3 Golf when it launched in 1991, as it implemented front airbags. The VR-6 variant was also launched, giving drivers a more upmarket and relaxed driving experience. It also had a reduced carbon footprint.

The Mk4 was launched in 1997 with in-built satellite navigation. Later models also included electric stability control and a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Mk5 was introduced in 2003 with new body styles and more interior space. This was withdrawn in 2008 when the Mk6 hit the roads, with a higher degree of safety and a range of new hi-tech features, including hill start assist and LED taillights.

The Mk7 was released in 2012, with all models containing more economical engines, reduced emissions, and a range of new features, including an automated emergency braking system and adaptive cruise control. In 2020, the Mk 8 was released, with 1.5-litre TSI engine and advanced tech to reduce fuel emissions.

Which Volkswagen Golf Is Right For You?

There are currently 11 trim levels on the market, each of which varies in price according to the age and specifications available. Engine sizes vary, with entry models incorporating a 1.2-litre engine and newer models incorporating 2.0-litre engines.

The Golf S is the very basic model, with a 1.2-litre engine, and features including Bluetooth and DAB radio. The Golf SE is an upgraded model, with front and rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, and adaptive cruise control. SE Navigation upgrades things further with a sat-nav system and automatic emergency braking.

For more power and such niceties as interior ambient lighting, consider the GT model, with a 1.5 TSI EVO engine. Or consider the R-Line with 1.5, 1.6, or 2.0 engine variants, and a sportier interior and exterior.

The diesel GTD packs a powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine under the bonnet, as does the GTI petrol version. The hybrid GTE is a powerful eco-car with a petrol engine and electric motors. The GTE Advance is an upgraded model, and the two other trims available are the more powerful Golf E and the recent Golf R, which features a range of upmarket features, including LED interior lights and upgradeable touch screens for the dashboard.
