The Evolution Of The Volkswagen Beetle
The prototype of the German-based Volkswagen Beetle first appeared in 1938. The car factory was eventually taken off by the Americans and handed over to British control in 1945. It was at this time that the car started to take on the bug-like shape that we are all familiar with and it went into mass production for the first time. With a 1.1-litre air-cooled flat-four engine rated at 30hp, it wasn't as powerful as it is today, but it was still desired by many.
Small changes were made to the Beetle throughout the 50s, including the inclusion of 4-door models and a few minor alterations to the aesthetics. There were no major updates until 1967 when the familiar sloped headlights were replaced with upright units and larger rear lights. An upgraded braking system was also implemented and two-speed windshield wipers.
The Super Beetle arrived in 1971 with a new front suspension and more space under the hood and the next major update came in 1998, with the New Beetle, which had a more powerful 115-hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, and a revamped interior. The car has retained its familiar form and is now available in a variety of trims, including the R-Line and GSR. While no longer in production, there are still many used VW cars for sale across the UK and beyond.
Buying A Used Volkswagen Beetle
Depending on your budget, a range of VW Beetles are available on the used market, and trim levels and features vary between them.
The most recent model of the VW Beetle comes in a variety of trim levels, including the 2.0T S, the 2.0T SE, and the 2.0T Final Edition SEL.
Each Beetle comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The S trim features all that we have come to know and love about the Beetle, with a range of paint colours, including Tornade Red and Orange Metallic, and a four-cylinder engine that punches out 174 horsepower. Safety and infotainment features are included, but if you want more luxury, the SE is where its at, with its heated front seats and leatherette upholstery. The SEL is more expensive, but you can expect HID headlamps and LED taillights, an upgraded 6.3-inch touch screen with navigation, a premium sound system, and diamond-stitched seats if you go for the Final Edition.
