Search Used Coupe Cars for Sale

To understand the history of the coupe, you first need to look at the horse-drawn carriages of the 18th century Back then, that was the main mode of transportation. These carriages typically sat two people. The original coupe variety eliminated back-facing seats in carriages. That made it easier for passengers to climb aboard.

When the actual coupe vehicle was introduced, it was first marketed as a car that was manageable to drive, so you could run errands and visit friends. Clearly, this little car came a long way.

What is a Coupe?

Coupes lost a bit of their luster in the 1970s when saloons began to take over and people were looking for family cars. Because coupes tended to have smaller bodies and only two doors, their sales took a hit. The 1977 International Standard ISO 3383-1977 defined a coupe as a car with a closed-body design, at least one row with two seats, and a fixed roof that could potentially open, or a rear opening.

Because of the growing popularity of saloons, some manufacturers began to make larger, four-door coupes.

At one point in the 21st century, some of the popular coupes of the past stopped being manufactured altogether, including the classic Pontiac Firebird. Today, however, coupes are starting to make a comeback as people are more interested in performance cars. They are popular with both young drivers and the Baby Boomer generation, who are focused less on the need for extra space, and more on reliability, practicality, and control.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages?

The pros and cons of owning a coupe really depend on what you’re looking for in a vehicle. But, if you’re in the market for a new car and a coupe catches your eye, keep the following points in mind.

Pros

  • A spacious front interior
  • Powerful
  • High-performance
  • Higher speeds with better fuel economy

Cons:

  • Small in size and typically not right for families
  • Limited storage

As you might expect, the biggest drawbacks of a coupe are its size. But, for some people, that’s also its biggest attraction. It really depends on where you are in your life and the type of model you’re looking for. Coupes aren’t just fun weekend cars. Because of their great fuel economy, they are wonderful for commuting to work, or everyday travel.

Is a Coupe Right for Me?

Whether a coupe is the right type of car for you depends on the size you’re looking for. If you don’t have a large family and you don’t need a lot of storage space, a coupe is a great option and gives you a lot of control on the road.
